So keep calm & carry-on!
What to Know and How to Pack
After your final fitting, your wedding dress will most likely be packed up and ready for traveling. It’s best to leave it packed in the bag until you arrive at your destination. If you didn’t purchase your wedding dress from a retailer that works with wedding attire, or your dress didn’t come with a garment bag you can easily purchase one online.
How to Pack
1.Check with your airlines carry-on policies & dimensions to ensure your garment bag is acceptable.
2.Hang the dress in the garment bag so that the train trails out at the bottom. Fold the train and tuck it into the bottom of the garment bag. Gather the bottom sides of the dress and fold each of them in toward the center. Then, grasp the bottom edge of the train and roll it in towards the center of the dress. This way, you can place it completely in the garment bag.
3.Zip up the garment bag without snagging the delicate fabric.
4.Label the garment bag with your contact information.
Traveling by Plane
If you plan on flying to your destination location, never ever check your wedding dress for a flight. We highly recommend taking your dress with you as a carry-on item. This way you can avoid any lost luggage or delay and you know that your dress will arrive safely. Don’t forget to pack the little things like shoes, jewelry, shapeware, hair accessories and anything else you plan to wear on your wedding day in your carry on!
Here are a few options for getting your dress on a plane!
Options on The Airplane
1.If the seat next to you is open or if there is an open seat near by, ask a crew member if you can set your dress on the seat. Loosely fold the garment bag in half or thirds to set on the seat.
2.Wait until all luggage is put in the overhead bins and put the dress in the overhead bins on top of the luggage.
3.Ask to store in the airplane coat closet (if available).
Packing in a Luggage Bag
1.Check your airlines dimensions and weight requirements to ensure your luggage is acceptable.
2.Lay the garment bag flat and fold it in half or thirds. Keep your folds very loose to prevent the fabric from creasing.
3.Label your carry-on bag with your contact information.
4.Store your luggage in overhead bin.
Traveling by Car
If you plan on driving to your destination and will be in the car for long stretches of time, it’s best to lay your garment bag flat. Utilize the trunk or backseat, which we totally recommend using the backseat this way you’ll have the A/C on. Make sure not to leave your wedding dress in a hot car for a long period of time especially those with beading they tend to turn yellow with the heat. So, the cooler or darker the place the better!
You’ve Reached your Destination
Once you’ve arrived at your location the first thing you will want to do is take your dress out of the garment bag. This will help the wrinkles that were created in transit. For those stubborn wrinkles you can steam them out. Be sure to always check the label to ensure that fabric is suitable for steaming. If you left your steamer at home don’t sweat, it! Did you know that you can hire a professional onsite wedding dress steaming service? The wedding steamer is a mobile professional steaming service that will literally travel to take care of your dress leaving it flawless and ready to wear!
And that’s it!! It’s that easy! Cheers to safe travels for both you and your dress!
